Goomeri Project

In this post we will cover two events in goomeri History. The arrival of the German people and the Apostolic Church of Goomeri . In 1911 The Boonara Estate was auctioned and the Goomeri Township was created .  In 1912 Apostolic Church of Queensland attempting to increase the number of adherents to their denomination decided to sponsor a group of migrants from Germany. Mostly working class from various part of Germany they were offered a better life for themselves and their children. The new immigrants were taken into Bundaberg and worked on cane field. They could not speak English so a pastor from the Apostolic church who later become their mentor and leader Mr Fred H Keune went with the group. Mr Keune himself a German immigrant understood those hard working men and women and he realised that best solution was to find these people their own land. In this post we will cover several events in the early history of Goomeri Town and the connection between David Jones and the creation of Goomeri. There is evidence that the area as we know now wide Bay - South Burnett, that people were in this area since 1840s. Some were squatters, Some may have pastoral lease and some were here so they can remain unnoticed from the government.  In 1946 British Government passed the Australian land sale Act which granted squatters “pre-emptive rights and fourteen years lease “ The law also eased acquiring newly released land for the settlers. So a group of young adventourous men rode from Brisbane Valley exploring the newly discovered country. Among them was Edward Hawkins. After the usual difficulties that most pastoralists encountered, Hawkins made some progress and built a homestead in Boonara. The first Picture showing the old Goomeri Post Office which was burnt down in 1939 and replaced by the present brick structure next to Joes Grand Hotel. The old wooden post office was built in 1924. Talking about the Postal system in town, there is an interesting fact-based story about the most famous outlaw to operate in the south Burnett who's specialty was holding up the mailman on their lonely routes. His name was James Mcpherson, or the wild Scotsman as he was known locally. He was brought up in a well do family but for whatever reason McPherson bore a grudge against society from his youth. When he was captured in a hold-up and shooting incident in NSW he escaped and reappeared in the Burnett district. Going back to his specialty of holding up the mailman, his main victim was Patrick McCallum, a mailman who operated between Gayndah and Nanango. You competed in your first competition at the age of 43 at the QLD Rookie Titles , so how do you manage the balance between a training schedule, your work and personal life? Bec Smart Trying to fit everything in the day is extremely hard at times. You must have a routine,  but also be flexible and be able to work around things when you have a change. Lots of dedication, commitment and self discipline is a must. Having family that understand how important your journey/ goal is makes it a little easier to, supporting me n helping me when I need it. I work roughly 9 to 10 hrs a day and training 2 hrs × 4 days, 3 hrs × 2 days a week. Subject We are looking for photographs that illustrate a point of view, a perspective of how the entrant sees and feels about his or her connection to life in Goomeri & surrounding area Kilkivan to wondai. The image will be judged for its concept, composition and relation to the theme. Prizes All selected photographs will be exhibited as a pre festival programme at the Goomeri Pumpkin Festival 2018 All selected photographers will receive a gift pack and media exposure before and after the exhibition Exhibition The photographic project exhibition will be organised by the Goomeri Project a non-profit community organization in collaboration with the Goomeri Pumpkin Festival.
